Who We Are
Renew Oceans is a non-profit organization working to reduce ocean plastic pollution where it begins—in populous river-adjacent communities in the developing world.
Our scalable approach involves a deep engagement of local communities, which includes partnership with community leaders, collaboration with and fair incentives for individual waste pickers, and a localized plastic pollution infrastructure that encompasses land and water collection, diversion from ocean current flow, and conversion of low-value plastics to diesel fuel.
We integrate innovative systems and technology that not only address solid plastic pollution (like water bottles), but also, for the first time in our regions of focus, create end markets for soft plastics—opening up new financial opportunities and improving quality of life for our network of waste pickers.
Our work will divert significant amounts of ocean-bound plastic waste from polluted rivers and their tributary systems.
We will begin with Renew Ganga, a dedicated project near the Ganges riverbanks in Varanasi, India.
